MOVIE REPLICAS

Outside of the Kit Rae Fantasy Art brand, Kit has designed numerous knives, weapons, and tools for various companies, mostly in the tactical and sporting catgories, and he supervised the replicas for many licensed film and video game weapons. After constant inquiries about these items we started sort of a scrapbook list. The Brands Kit has designed for include Honshu, M48 Kommando, United Cutlery, Combat Commander, Black Ronin, Tailwind, Rigid Knives, Colt, Harley-Davidson, Stanley, Remington, Gil Hibben, among others, going way back early in his career. It is by no means complete, but most of his designs are listed, to the best of our memories. The list goes back to approximately 1985 when Kit first started in the knife business. Indiana Jones Khyber Bowie

UC501, UC1119 Indiana Jones Khyber Bowie – My first movie license design from 1988. The original president of United Cutlery, Kevin Pipes, was a big Indiana Jones fan like me. He got us in the door at Lucasfilm with a license. Initially we were going to make the machete Indy uses on the rope bridge scene in Temple of Doom, but it was just so plain and boring looking that we wanted to design something new, like a relic that Indy would have picked up in his travels. I sketched dozens of designs but nothing was coming together for me. I designed and designed, right up to the morning when we were supposed to meet with Lucasfilm and finlaize the deal and show them what we intended to make. I finally came up with the basic design, drawing on a hotel napkin at breakfast. Kevin got the license deal completed and we were invited to see a screening of the new Indiana Jones film, The Last Crusade, in George Lucas own theatre at Lucas Valley ranch. I named the knife a Khyber Bowie since it had some characteristics of a Khyber. I hand painted the packaging art, doing my best imitation of an Ansel movie poster. We later turned my art into a poster that won an ADDY award that year for the printing. The knife was hugely successful, selling something like 200,000 units. United had a few 3x size Indy bowies made to display in our showroom and to give to a few of our top distributors.

TOTAL RECALL

Total Recall Dagger

UC485 Total Recall Dagger – I designed some original knives for this film (see the Hibben Double Shadow) but we were too late to get them in. As it turns out, the one Swarzenegger used in the film was a Cold Steel push dagger, seen for about one second of screen time. United had the license already when we found this out, so it was decided we would create a “licensed product” instead. I had designed this push dagger so it was chosen to be branded as a Total Recall prodcut even though it was not in the film!
